Yes. Many people seem to think that from the Stone Age to the start of the 20th Century, society was anti-sex and anti-woman and that nowadays we're neither. I constantly have conversations like this with my liberal friends:
Me: Oh fuck, did you hear that they're still using Christianity to justify why same-sex marriage shouldn't be legal in Finland? I want my rights now! Other person: 40 years ago homosexuality was illegal. Just think about how far we've come! Sooner or later we'll have full equality. It's just a matter of time. Me: ... Right. By the by, did you know that in the start of the 20th Century, Berlin was the capital of gay Europe, with lively gay clubs, gay magazines and organizations lobbying for equal rights? In the 20's, you could basically live out of the closet. Other person: No, I didn't know. That's really awesome! Me: Guess what happened in the 30's? Other person: I don't know. No, wait - *click*. Oh, right.
I don't know if you're familiar with the tv show I'm writing about, but anyway, Merlin is really inconsistent about the role of women. We've got Guinevere, who is a daughter of the blacksmith and can forge swords, but her role in the show is mostly to be pretty and do laundry. She and Morgana both can kick some ass, but when another woman is shown sword-fighting, Morgana is like "Oh my god, it's a WOMAN! With a sword! Scandalous!"
